The Passage Supports the London Charter to End Rough Sleeping

The Passage supports the London Charter to End Rough Sleeping and is part of the core group of organisations that make up the steering group. Their vision is of a society where street homelessness no longer exists, and everyone has a place to call home.

The Passage’s pioneering homelessness prevention scheme - No Night Out - is based on the idea that prevention is the key to ending rough sleeping. Prevention stops the cycle of trauma before it begins, as we know that just one night on the streets can have a detrimental impact on an individual’s mental and physical health.

The scheme was developed following the pandemic when they identified an effective working model – moving people into emergency accommodation during the ‘Everyone In’ initiative.

Since launching in 2021, No Night Out has enabled The Passage to prevent 196 people from spending their first night out on the streets. Of those people, only five returned to the streets, despite their best efforts to support them. That’s a success rate of 96%.

The team work with people in a way that best suits their individual needs, for as long as it takes; because meaningful and lasting change requires time, patience and trust.

The No Night Out prevention scheme provides emergency accommodation for those at risk of spending their first night on the streets, whilst teams at The Passage work with them to find a more suitable solution. This scheme not only enables The Passage to protect people’s safety and wellbeing, but also provides an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of their situation and what led them there.

This deeper understanding ensures that they can provide holistic, wrap-around support to people through a range of their services, helping them on a journey to a happier, healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
